Traditionally, yogis practiced asana postures to prepare the body for meditation. To make the body strong, and supple, able to sit up with a straight spine during meditation.
If you find you struggle to jump straight into meditation, or that your body slounches and feels weak while you’re doing it, you might like to incorporate some stretching or movement into your meditation practice.
If you already do yoga, you could do some of your favourite asanas before you sit down to meditate.
If you’re not into yoga, you can still incorporate some gentle stretching into your pre-meditation routine, just wake your body up, and prepare it for the meditation.
There might be other physical things you can do that support your meditation. Maybe you feel better if you shower first, more alert and awake. Maybe drinking coffee before you meditate makes you too caffeinated, and it’s better for you to meditate first.
There’s no right or wrong, just notice if there’s anything you can do physically that helps you feel calmer, more grounded, and ready to meditate, be it a short asana practice or holding off your first cup of coffee until you’ve meditated.
